Nene Valley Strategic Plan - Realising the Potential of the Nene Valley
Consultation Draft February 2010

The River Nene Regional Park, in partnership with Bee Bee Developments Ltd, ALSF Natural England, Environment Agency, Natural England and North Northamptonshire Development Company, and stakeholders, have produced the above document to support the delivery of a shared vision for the future of the Nene Valley. This focuses on the Nene Valley and its hinterland between Northampton and Peterborough, but also extends to the Rockingham Forest and, indeed, most of the area of North Northamptonshire.

The Nene Valley is widely recognised as a major cultural and natural asset and forms a natural counterpoint to the growth towns in Northamptonshire, and the historic small towns and villages than run along the valley floor and ridgelines. With its varied landscape, unique character and the series of open water bodies along the Nene Valley, that are of international importance for overwintering birds, we need to make sure that growth in Northamptonshire is delivered with a positive approach to environmental management.

Consequently, our vision is that "By 2021, the Nene Valley will be nationally recognised as an exemplar for the innovative management and enhancement of its natural and cultural environment, leading to a better quality of life for new and existing communities, whilst accommodating unprecedented growth".

The strategic plan considers the strategic context of the Nene Valley and the drivers for change, as well as identifying opportunities for the delivery of this vision through five themes. These are; a more enjoyed River Nene, reinvigorated Nene Towns, a living countryside, a connected Nene Valley and enhanced natural attractions and a natural playground.

We recognise that our vision is ambitious and that, for the tangible social, economic and environmental benefits it offers to be achieved, we will need to work in partnership to maximise the expertise and resources that can be brought to bear on this important investment in its future.  Consequently, we are pleased to invite you to let us have your views on the consultation draft.
