The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough are now the proud owners of Summer Leys Local Nature Reserve near Wellingborough, thanks to funding from River Nene Regional Park and Natural England.

A grant allowed this area to be landscaped with areas of grass, small plots for the children to grow plants in, path and a refurbished play house.

The Wollaston to Earls Barton Wetlands Wilderness is an exciting project to make optimal use of former aggregate extraction lakes that are proposed to become part of the Nene Valley Special Protection Area (SPA).

Part of a larger project at Summer Leys. This part of the project was for improvements at the site which include: access and interpretation, habitat creation and management, path clearance and mowing, habitat survey and assessment, community involvement and PR and events for the local population.

This community orchard is used by a large number of the local population but lacks any interpretation material. The site is one of the largest orchards left in Northamptonshire and was planted during the First World War.

Mr Standen has kindly donated this important site, adjacent to Wansford Pasture SSSI, to the Wildlife Trust.  A grant was given to help with the restoration of the site.
