Meadow re-creation project at Dovecote Farm, Upper Heyford

The meadow re-creation project at Upper Heyford is now in its fourth year and results from the survey conducted by Dr Robin Field of RNRP, Heather Ball and Matt Johnson of the Wildlife Trust and Sarah Still of Moulton College. Several new species such as Cowslip and Cuckoo flower have appeared for the first time this year, while Quaking grass was now recorded in all the samples on Broadmeadow. The two meadows, Broadmeadow and Middle Park, are going to be cut for hay later in July and will be grazed later on in the autumn.

At the moment the meadows are a sea of colour with white being Oxeye daisy and Yarrow, yellow from Birdsfoot trefoil, Ladies bedstraw, Yellow rattle and Meadow buttercup and purple from Knapweed, Tufted vetch and selfheal.

The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) had a guided walk led by Dr Robin Field on Thursday 30th June at the meadows. Several local farmers and landowners saw how the meadows have developed over the last few years and questions were answered about how further meadows could be restored or re-created.
