Southwick Woods- Land Purchase
10 Jul 2009
The Wildlife Trust for Northamptonshire received money to help with the purchase of Southwick Wood and land between Southwick Wood and Short Wood, thus safeguarding the ancient woodland for the future.
The project was mainly funded via Heritage Lottery Fund with the balance coming from the RNRP. Paul Evans, senior reserves officer for the Wildlife Trust in Northamptonshire, said, "This is a really important step on securing the future of wildlife in Southwick Wood and surrounding Rockingham Forest".
The land between the two woods will be used to create a woodland link. The site will be allowed to regenerate naturally once a network of rides has been laid out. The sites are important ancient woodlands with Short Wood being a SSSI and both woods are close to a third wood Glapthorn Cow Pastures SSSI. All three woods should now become important habitat for the regional important butterfly the Black Hairstreak.
