Breathing Spaces - Mid Nene Valley (2006-2008)
11 Sep 2008
This project aims to bring a section of the Nene Valley between Wellingborough and Summer Leys nature reserve into good environmental management. Areas of former gravel extraction will be bought, and good land management of these areas will take place by working with the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust and local farmers.
The area is important, as it provides habitat for a number of birds in the former gravel pits. Much of the area has recently been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and visitor interest in the area is leading to more visitors to the adjacent Summer Leys nature reserve. This project will help to open up access to a wider area, while remembering the needs of the wildlife that uses the site.
The project will also involve the construction of a ‘greenway’ – a path open to walkers and cyclists that provides a link from Wellingborough Embankment car park through to Summer Leys nature reserve, along a disused railway line.
