A woodland opportunity map was begun in 2013 with the aim of identifying priority locations for the creation of new woodland, and also to highlight areas where woodland creation would be detrimental. The first phase of the map prioritises the areas surrounding and linking existing woodlands, as the expansion and connecting of woodlands is likely to have the greatest benefits for biodiversity, landscape character and recreation.
