Lake and wetland creation at Uplands Farm

Over the years ironstone has been removed from various parts of the county. This has left it mark on Uplands Farm, with a deep scar next to an embankment where trains used to carry the ironstone to the works.

This area has several natural springs, one of which was captured to provide water for the steam engines. Since these activities have ceased a naturally wet area had developed and a small pond had been created.

A grant was awarded to produce a lake for wildlife flanked by a surrounding area of wet grassland sown with a wildflower mixture.

A path to a screen hide has been provided along with a parking place for a minibus. These are to be used by local schoolchildren, who as well as seeing a wide range of wildlife will also be able to observe how a historical land use can affect an area.
